Witch's Brews

Writer's picture: AmethystRunewitchAmethystRunewitch

Earlier this year, I attended the Cauldron of Wisdom 2 virtual conference run by Emily at Wise Woman Witchery. One of the workshops was all about tea spells for manifestation. This particular workshop got me thinking about all the ways I could use tea over the cooler months. While I knew I could use tea as a form of magick, I'd never really consciously brewed a cup tea with intentions before. Because of this, I've been wanting to look at the associations of the ingredients of some of my favourite teas (and a few I try while writing this).

I have three teas that I absolutely love to drink: Spicy Chai, Earl Grey and Rose. Spicy Chai is perfect to me during the cooler months as I feel like it warms and hugs me from the inside. Earl Grey is my standard tea, and yes I do know it's not just tea leaves but I'm not a fan of plain tea or just black tea as I prefer ones that either have a nice flavour or aroma. Rose tea is my go-to for when I feel like I need some extra love or as part of my self-love care practice.

Black tea is in all three of these teas but there is a variety of different teas that make up black tea: Assam, Ceylon and Darjeeling seem to be the main three but there are others that are grown in India and China. It all depends on what is being put with the tea leaves as to which one is used as they have different tastes. Black tea has its own magickal associations just like any other herb and plant - it's generally associated with strength, stability, removing negativity, alertness, energy and courage.

Now that I've covered the tea element, I'll go through the associations of the other ingredients of each of my favourite teas and how I could use them in my magickal practice moving forwards. As much as I say I could use these teas, you could also use them in your own practices.

My loose leaf Spicy Chai blend

The ingredients of the Spicy Chai blend that I love and brew are: Assam tea leaves, Cardamom, Ginger, Cinnamon, Cloves and Black Pepper. Cardamom is a gentle receiving herb, associated with Venus and/or Mars, water, protection, and love. Ginger is a fire herb and is associated with prosperity, passion, protection, joy and success. Ginger can also be used to speed spells up. Cinnamon is a projective herb, associated with the Sun and/or Mars, and it can be used for healing, protection, strength, and success. Cloves are associated with the element of fire, the planet Jupiter, and can be used for good luck, prosperity, friendship, and protection. Black Pepper is a masculine and projective herb, and it is associated with the planet Mars, the element of Fire, protection, confidence, inner strength, releasing negativity and jealousy, cleansing, purification, courage, passion, ambition, creativity, and individuality. So from all these ingredients, I could brew this particular tea if I wanted to boost my personal protection spells, for passion, or for courage but also for sucess or prosperity.

My loose leaf Earl Grey blend

The Earl Grey tea blend I love to use contains: Ceylon black tea, Orange Peel, Bergamot oil, and Marigold petals. Orange Peel is associated with the Sun, the element of Fire, abundance and drawing money to you, but I would also associate this with protection as the peel protects the fruit. Orange Peel is not the same as Oranges because it's the outer part and not the inner fruit. Bergamot is a feminine fruit and is associated with the Sun, abundance, clarity, friendship, sleep, peace, confidence and harmony. Marigold petals are associated with the Sun, the element of Fire, attracting respect and admiration, good luck, positivity, confidence, protection, and abundance. With this combination of ingredients, I could use this as an attracting tea, to bring certain things to me and most especially if I think of whatever I want to attract while stirring my tea clockwise (clockwise is good for attracting while anti-clockwise is good for banishing). I could also use this as a tea for abundance.

My loose leaf Rose tea blend

The Rose Tea contains a black tea from the Fujian province of China and rose petals. This particular blend is layered 5 times with rose petals and this seems to be rather a magickal number - the number of the elements, directions that can be called in, or the five-pointed star within a pentacle or pentagram. Rose is a feminine receptive herb and is associated with the planet Venus, the element of Water, love, passion, healing, peace, and spiritual growth. This is my go-to drink when I need some extra power to my self-love practices.

My Night Time tisane

I have also found a rather likable tisane that contains 13 different fruits and herbs: rosehip, hibiscus flower, chamomile flower, lavender flower, licorice root, ginger root, echinacea leaf and root, elderberry, blackcurrant fruit, valerian root, blueberry flavour, and blackcurrant flavour. I call this a tisane because it doesn't contain any part of the tea plant and is a water-based infusion of herbs, flowers, leaves, and spices. Ginger I've already covered so I won't repeat that here but I will cover the associations of the other ingredients of this blend. I hadn't known until now that Rosehip is the fruit of the rose bush so Rose associations would be appropriate here. Hibiscus is associated with the planet Venus, the element of Water, passion, love, divination, freedom, beauty, courage, calmness and sleep. Chamomile is a masculine herb and is associated with the element of Water, purification, protection, meditation, good luck, and attraction. Lavender is a very well known plant but if you've not worked with it before, I'll go through the associations: the elements of Air and/or Fire, the planet Mercury, sleep, peace and meditation. Licorice root is associated with the planet Mercury, love, passion, fidelity, sleep, and satisfaction. Echinacea is associated with the planet Mars, the element of Earth, healing, prosperity, protection, power, inner strength, purification, success, and sleep. Elderberry is a feminine herb and is associated with the planet Venus, the element of Water, beauty, love, purification, healing, abundance, protection, and sleep. Blackcurrant - both fruit and flavour - is associated with courage, forgiveness, spirituality, remote healing, cleansing, and sleep. Valerian root is associated with removing guilt, removing negative self-talk, developing self-acceptance, promoting sleep, purification, protection, love, and positivity. Blueberry is associated with the planets Venus and the Moon, the elements of Water and Earth, protection, beauty, youthfulness, calmness, memory, and peace. This particular blend is very much a tisane to drink before bedtime because of the calming associations and it has become part of my night routine.

So those are my absolute favourite teas but I do have a whole collection of other teas that I am in the process of trying. Most of my teas have come from the monthly subscription box by Witch Casket in either loose leaf form or two of the brews pre-packaged in tea-bags. They all have different themes or associations for which I could brew them (see my YouTube channel for some unboxing videos of past Caskets).

A close friend of mine gifted me a set of 20 teas/tisanes in individual tea-bags. I've tried a few of them so far and I was rather surprised when I really liked them. The first one I tried was called Melbourne Breakfast and it contained black tea, and natural and artificial vanilla flavouring. The second one I tried was called New York Breakfast and it contained black tea, cinnamon, and natural and artificial vanilla flavouring. I've covered Cinnamon and black tea already so I'll give Vanilla's correspondences. Vanilla is a feminine receptive herb and it is associated with the planet Venus, the element of Water, love, passion, happiness, healing, friendship, luck and beauty. I could use both of these teas for healing, or to strengthen myself (literally and spiritually).

So you absolutely can use tea as part of your daily magick and it's one of the simpler forms that can be used. I will definitely be using this as part of my own daily practices now that I have more knowledge, especially about my favourite blends.

I hope this inspires you to use your own favourite tea blends and don't worry if you prefer tea-bags to loose leaf because the intent will still be the same.

Peace and love to all!!
