Respecting All Life

I was chatting with a friend recently about how this planet we live on seems so small sometimes but in reality is rather large (provided you don't compare it to the likes of Jupiter or Saturn). This conversation got me thinking about the human mindset towards the other creatures we share this planet with.

I'm using the term creatures as humans we are as much an animal as any other on this planet but we as a species have forgotten this. We are as animalistic as dogs, cats, bearded dragons, iguanas, beavers, cows, and sheep, to name just a few of the creatures we share this planet with.

My friend and I were talking about timezones and I mentioned how Seoul in South Korea is 8 hours ahead of the UK. My friend then said that was quite a distance, and I responded that Seoul is in the exact opposite timezone as the west coast of America which is 8 hours behind the UK, to which she replied with: "it feels like such a small world but it's really not".

This then made me think of the impact that we humans are having on the world and I said that the timezones show that even though we are "small" creatures, we are having a huge impact on the world.

I followed this line of thought and mentioned that we, as a species, seem to have a "superiority complex" when it comes to the other creatures we share this world with. We compare the mental capacity of other creatures by our own human capacity, labelling these other creatures as "stupid" or "incapable" of thinking in the same ways as humans. The problem with this line of thinking is that we hae forgotten that there are other ways of thinking and being because we feel that we are superior to other creatures and better than them.

And we use this "excuse" to label other creatures as being stupid or just clever enough to warrant further investigation (through tests and other human-derived methods) to measure them against the human brain/thinking. We just assume that our human way of thinking is the best way possible but this isn't always true. An example of this is the HS2 in the UK, a high speed train that will connect two cities in Scotland to London with a journey time of just 3 hours. This has been touted as bringing balance to the country and a greater convenience to humans but in order to create this route, we have to destroy the natural habitats of other creatures to make way for our human superiority, which isn't necessarily such a good thing because those creatures then have to find other habitats to make their home or risk their lives.

But as witches, we can also, even subconsciously, show this kind of superiority when we judge other beliefs. The most common that I've experienced is the rule of three. I say this because I constantly see posts from other witches asking for certain spells or ideas for a spell and rather than getting these ideas, others comment saying "be careful because it will come back to you threefold". Not all witches are Wiccan and the Threefold Law is one of the main tenets of Wicca, so it doesn't apply to all witches unless as an individual believes in it.

Another example that I've seen is where someone asks for a love spell and others reply saying not to do one because it messes with free will. While I do personally believe in this, I can also see how love spells don't necessarily have to be about capturing the attention of others. Love spells can be about attracting and garnering more love within your life, whether that is through the practice of self-love, improving current relationships or being open to love in general. We can be so quick to judge based on what first appears to be the situation but we forget that we aren't involved and so we can't see every side, nor are we presented with every side.

We forget and judge others based on our own individual capabilities and beliefs when they don't apply to the rest of the world around us. We forget that we are as much a part of this world and nature because we believe we have a "superior" brain and thinking capacity.

While there is no right way to be a witch because you can have whatever beliefs you want, follow any religion or no religion at all, I do believe that there is a right way to be a human and this is possible by showing respect to all creatures that live on this planet, regardless of their religion or sexuality, but most importanly their species.

We aren't meant to "rule the world" because we are a necessary part of the world but so are the other creatures that live on this planet with us. We are a judgemental species but this is something that we've learned to be over time. We judge other cultures, religions and ways of life when we don't know anything about them. We understand that there are different talents and skills but we still judge based on who can do it better or by our own human standards.

It's time for us as a species to stop judging other creatures and, more importantly, ourselves based on the capabilities, talents and skills of others. We need to start respecting other forms and ways of life more before we completely destroy them. It's time that we as a species respected all life on this planet - before it's too late.

I know this was a bit of a deep one but I felt it needed sharing with the world generally, as well as those who might appreciate such a view.

Peace and love to all!!!!
