Today it's time to start thinking about the next planet to go retrograde, which is Jupiter. This retrograde will last from 9th October to 4th February 2025, and that's only because Jupiter is one of the outer planets whose orbits are much larger and slower than the inner planets.
Jupiter is the planet of expansion, as well as our sense of belief and faith in our own individual selves plus the community/world around us. This is the planet of opportunity because each one gives us the chance to learn and expand our knowledge-base.
If we take this retrograde as one of those chances to learn, we are likely to have the opportunity to prosper, but we have to open ourselves up to it. This is another thing that Jupiter is associated with: opening up mentally to new horizons.
Jupiter will be in the sign of Gemini, so there's an even greater connection to the mental side of things. But it's also about communication, whether we might be talking too much, too little, or about the wrong topics. Gemini also brings a sense of potential for new beliefs for us as a community because this is a very social sign.
So during this particular retrograde, we should be thinking about being open to new ideas and horizons on a personal AND a communal level. Balancing the topics, who talks and how long for - these are more things for us to consider during the next four months.
I also think it's interesting that the final part of the American Presidential Race is set to happen during this time with Americans voting, the election results being announced, and the inauguration of the next President - all while Jupiter is pushing everyone to expand their individual minds for the benefit of everyone.
So with all of that, let's see if Jupiter has any other wisdom for us, like how to be open mentally or what we can do to overcome mental obstacles. I've used the Druid Animal Oracle deck by Philip and Stephanie Carr-Gomm for a spread I created.
How can we be open to Jupiter's expansion opportunities?
Air Dragon Reversed
The Air Dragon comes to warn us against becoming enslaved to a particular ideal, dogma or belief system that is not in our best interest. With expansion can come obsession and that can lead us to delusion, on a personal level and/or a community one. We have to take care that we don't dive dep into one idea without considering every option that is available.
We can be open to Jupiter's expansion opportunities by using the method of trial-and-error, which means if life improves for everyone it's a good option but if it doesn't then it's not the right choice.
Sometimes we can't know exactly what will work so we have to experiment.
What can we do to overcome any mental obstacles we face?
Boar Reversed, Water Dragon Reversed
The Boar comes to warn us against madness. In the past, people who were deemed mad (including the legendary Merlin) would become swineherds, looking after herds of pigs. However, sometimes we have to experience a "breakdown" if we want to release the old and bring in newer and deper ideas etc. There can be a fine lie between madness and insight, as shown by Merlin talking to the pigs he looked after, so it's important we don't fear any breakdowns.
With the Water Dragon, there also comes a warning to approach any exploration of our psyches and our pasts with caution. I believe this is cautioning against too much shadow work, too much exploration of past events that can still trigger us in our present lives. We should remember that shadow work is not meant to be one big project that needs to be completed as soon as possible - it's a longer, if not lifelong, project because we need to integrate what we learn and the healing itself into our lives. Our emotions should not rule us either so that we can avoid regret.
Which area of our lives will most likely be affected by this retrograde?
Earth Dragon
The Earth Dragon comes to us to highlight our ideas of comfort, material possessions home, and self. These are all areas of our lives that are likely to be affected by Jupiter's retrograde.
We may have been feeling like someone is trying to stop us from feeling comfortable within ourselves, or even in our own homes. This could be caused by a variety of things, like jealousy or misunderstanding. If possible, building a relationship with those individuals could open up the way for everyone to achieve material wealth as well as the truest form of wealth which is Love.
Wealth is connected to love, our emotions, and the secrets of our hearts.
How can we come together as a community to grow?
Cat Reversed
With this card, there's another warning against becoming too complacent and focused on our own sense of comfort because as much as we can (and should) be independent, there comes a time when we need a community around us. We need to see our community as a whole, with each individual person having their part to play to make the locality a friendly and caring place.
With everything that is going on in the world, we might want to ignore or escape reality but we can't do this all the time. We need to be grounded and rooted in reality if we want to be able to face any and all challenges as an individual but also as a community.
There were a lot of reversed cards in that so a fair few warnings but I think that if we all try to work together, then we can reconnect with what it means to be a community. We believe we have to be independent and stand on our own two feet but we forget that we are a part of a larger group. The individual has become too important at the expense of the community. But we can fix this if we can only put in the effort to connect with others.
