Chakras: Overview

Writer's picture: AmethystRunewitchAmethystRunewitch

So I've recently been researching about chakras, what they do, what they influence, where they are and a whole raft of other information. Because there are seven main chakras (and hundreds of "minor" ones), I'm going to write about chakras generally here today and then focus on one chakra a week before reviewing the work I've been doing on them.

The chakra system starts from the base of the spine and moves upwards until it reaches the top of the head. The seven main chakras are the: Root Chakra, Sacral Chakra, Solar Plexus Chakra, Heart Chakra, Throat Chakra, Third Eye or Brow Chakra, and the Crown Chakra. While the chakras may be identified individually, they do interact with each other so as you work on one, that work has a domino effect on the others.

The first chakra is the Root Chakra typically has a red colour and can be located at the base of the spine. This is also known as the Base Chakra and its Sanskrit name is Muladhara, which means "root". It is typically represented by a four-petaled lotus, and is the chakra that others can build up from. To me, it's like the cornerstone that the energetic auric field can be built on when it is healthy and open. The Root Chakra is associated with the connection to the earth and our basic, fundamental needs for survival - from sustenance to shelter, from the physical health of our bodies to feelings of safety.

The second is the Sacral Chakra has an orange colour and is located in the lower abdomen. This chakra is also known as the Belly or Spleen Chakra, and its Sanskrit name is Svadhisthana, which can be roughly translated to mean "to sweeten". This chakra is associated with the pleasures of life, change, creativity, vitality, desires and nurturing our own selves. It is typically represented by a six-petaled lotus, and holds the ability to see beauty in the world around us.

The Solar Plexus Chakra is the third chakra, has a yellow colour and is located just below the ribcage. It's actually the name of that area of the body as well. This is also known as the Navel Chaakra and its Sanskrit name is Manipura, which translates to "city of jewels". It is typically represented by a lotus with 10 petals, and is associated with personal power, confidence, self-esteem and is the seat of our individual will. This is where confidence and belief in convictions comes from.

The next chakra is the Heart Chakra, which has a green colour and is located in the middle of the chest which is right where the heart can be found. The Sanskrit name is Anahata which translates to "unhurt, unstruck, and unbeaten". It is usually represented by a lotus that has 12 petals. This is the chakra associated with unconditional love, consideration of others, empathy, and compassion.

The fifth chakra is the Throat Chakra, which has a blue colour and it is located right where the name implies: the throat. The Sanskrit name is Visuddha, which means "pure" or "purification". It is typically represented by a lotus that has 16 petals. This is the chakra associated with expression and communication, whether verbal or otherwise.

The sixth chakra is the Brow or Third Eye Chakra, which has an indigo colour and it is located in the middle of the forehead just above the eyebrows. The Sanskrit name is Ajna, which translates to "perceive", "command", or "beyond wisdom". It is usually represented by a lotus with just two petals. It is associated with the imagination, inner sight, intuition. and all things relating to psychic abilities.

The final chakra I will be working with is the Coronal or Crown Chakra, which has a violet colour and is located at the top of the head. The Sanskrit name is Sahasrara, which translates to "thousand-fold" or "thousand-petaled". The latter is especially appropriate as it is represented by a lotus with 1000 petals. It is associated with insight, inner knowing, self-realisation, spirituality, and connection with the Divine.

I will freely admit to asking a friend for assistance with my work on my chakras, purely because I have only just started this phase of my journey, so that I could potentially make better progress with them. Because of this, I discovered that some of my chakras were blocked, some more than others but one of my chakras was nicely open. Again, I will go through the work I did to strengthen them.

This is just an introduction into the seven main chakras as I will be working with each one for at least a week and writing about my experiences as I go along. I want to be able to reflect on this journey and share what I experience.

I hope this gives you a basis for your own energy work as you move through whatever phase of your journey you are in.

Peace and love to all!!!
